52nd Inauguration of the Academic Year on the University of Silesia

On Monday, October 7th, 2019, the University of Silesia will inaugurate the academic year for the 52nd time. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 in the Kazimierz Popiołek Hall at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

US supporting the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The University of Silesia supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by representatives of 193 member states of the United Nations during the General Assembly in 2015.

In the "Transforming our world: Agenda for sustainable development 2030" resolution, 17 global goals, and 169 objectives and tasks have been listed as areas of key importance for humanity, taking into account the balance between economic, social and environmental development.

Prof. Paul Lagarde awarded with honorary doctorate degree at the University of Silesia

The honorary doctorate of the University of Silesia will be awarded to an eminent scholar, Professor Paul Lagarde. The ceremony of granting the highest academic dignity will take place on 13th September 2019. The request of the Council of the Faculty of Law and Administration in this matter was approved by the University Senate on 25th June 2019 (Resolution No. 396).

Henan Academy of Science paid a visit to US

On July 9, 2019, a delegation from the Henan Academy of Science visited the University of Silesia.

The visit was focused on establishing cooperation between both institutions in the field of science and environmental sciences.

International Mobility Week at University of Silesia in Katowice

The International Mobility Week, organised by the Department of International Relations within the Erasmus+ programme, was held between 10 and 14 June 2019. University of Silesia in Katowice hosted representatives of 18 foreign higher education institutions from Greece, Spain, Turkey, Denmark, Germany, Argentina, Russia, United Kingdom, China, Ukraine, Brazil and Kazakhstan.

New Statute of the University of Silesia

On Tuesday, 28th May 2019, the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice adopted the new Statute of the university. This most important legal act adjusts university’s internal regulations to the requirements of the new Law on Higher Education and Science, and introduces a number of solutions aimed at strengthening the research and teaching position of the University of Silesia. Its provisions also ensure respect for traditional academic values.

The new Statute sets out the rules for the organization and operation of the university, including:

Prof. Tadeusz Lewowicki awarded with honorary doctorate degree at the University of Silesia

Professor Tadeusz Lewowicki, one of the most eminent contemporary educators and recognized international authority, will receive the honorary doctorate degree at the University of Silesia in Katowice. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 4th June 2019, in Cieszyn. The request of the Council of the Faculty of Ethnology and Educational Sciences in this matter was approved by the Senate of the University of Silesia on 26th March 2019 (Resolution No. 340).

XXIII Festive Academic Concert

On the occasion of the anniversary of the University of Silesia, Rector of the University, Prof. Andrzej Kowalczyk invites to the XXIII Festive Academic Concert "Wieczorna Pieśń" (The Evening Song), which will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 5 PM in the concert hall of The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice (Zacisze 3 street).

Visit of Brazillian Delegation at US

On Friday, 17 May 2019, the University of Silesia in Katowice will host representatives of the Brazilian region Minas Gerais. The delegation stays in Poland at the invitation of the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship as part of the "International Urban Cooperation: Sustainable and Innovative Cities and Regions - Regional Action Latin America and the Caribbean" Program (IUC-LAC).

Author's Meetings with Ananda Devi

Ananda Devi is a Mauritian writer who lives in France, writes in French and is published in the largest publishing houses of Paris. She is considered the greatest living Mauritanian writer. In May 2019 she came to Poland for the first time, at the invitation of the Institut français in Warsaw.

Scientists of US receive appreciation in Geneva

An invention of the scientists of the Faculty of Computer Science and Materials Science of the University of Silesia received appreciation during the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva – Geneva Inventions, which took place from 10th to 14th April 2019 in Switzerland. University of Silesia in India

The representatives of the University of Silesia in Katowice will participate in an educational mission in India, which will take place from 31st March to 7th April 2019.

ProspectUS - New University Strategy

Seven groups of academic and administrative staff work on a new university strategy focusing on the research potential.  The results will be ready on 31st May 2019.

Led by the Vice-Rector for Finance and Development, Prof. Michał Daszykowski, the project focuses on six areas essential for our university to operate efficiently: staff, science, education, infrastructure, cooperation with the environment, and visibility.

Nicole Stott at 3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE

During the third edition of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE, which has taken place on 12th and 14th January 2019, we have hosted extraordinary guests – personas of the world of science. One of them was an American NASA astronaut, Nicole Stott.

Noblist Johannes Georg Bednorz at 3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE

During the 3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE we had a very special guest in Katowice – Johannes Georg Bednorz. Born May 16, 1950, J.G. Bednorz is German mineralogist and physicist and Nobel Laureate in the field of Physics.

For the discovery of the phenomenon of high-temperature superconductivity in ceramic materials, Bednorz has received a number of scientific prizes, most notably the esteemed Nobel Prize in the field of physics in 1987.

The 3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE, which has taken place from 10th to 12th January 2019, has ended last week and proven to be a huge success.

3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE

The next, already third, edition of the Silesian Science Festival will be held between 12th and 14th January 2019. Encouraged by the success of the last edition, the organisers of the event decided to extend the formula of those parts of the programme which worked out really well, as well as to offer the audience  completely new elements.

On Friday, 14th December 2018, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Poland – Francisco Javier Sanabria Valderrama – has visited the University of Silesia.

University of Silesia for Climate

The summit on climate change organized in Katowice from 2nd to 14th December 2018 is the most important global forum devoted to global climate policy. As part of this year's event, the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) will take place along with the 14th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 14).

Delegation of the University of Silesia in Ukraine

On 15-17 November 2018 the representatives of the University of Silesia, Marta Barciak from the International Students Admissions Office and Natalia Moiseienko from the School of Polish Language and Culture, will take part in the Education Abroad educational fairs in Kiev.

University of Silesia has signed a double degree agreement with the Kazakh State Women’s Teacher Training University

Between 6th and 9th November 2018 the University of Silesia in Katowice is visited by representatives of the Kazakh State Women’s Teacher Training University in Almaty. The cooperation between the universities was initiated in 2015 and has, so far, covered short-term student and staff exchange. The aim of the visit was to sign a double degree agreement in the field of English philology and discuss practical aspects of the double degree programme.

From 23rd to 27th October 2018 representatives of the University of Silesia in Katowice will participate in an educational mission in China.

On 17-18 October 2018 Indian ad film director, Prahlad Kakkar, has visited the Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia in Katowice.

Cooperation agreement with Beijing University of Technology

This week, the delegation of Beijing University of Technology has visited the University of Silesia in Katowice. The reason for the meeting was to broaden the cooperation between universities by extending the current cooperation agreement, which was concluded in signing the framework agreement between the universities on October 17, 2018 in Katowice.

Adaptation week for first-year students of the University of Silesia

Each year the university launches the Adaptation Week for foreign students in order to familiarize them with rules and specifics of studying in Poland. The Adaptation Week focusses on practical aspects of studying on the University of Silesia and transferring knowledge that would be useful for every student. 

University of Silesia at 30th Annual EAIE Conference and Exhibition

On 11th to 14th September 2018 representatives of the University of Silesia in Katowice participated in the 30th Annual EAIE Conference and Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland. The EAIE is the largest international higher education event in Europe. This year the EAIE attracted over 5 thousand participants involved in the internationalisation of higher education – from academics through international cooperation specialists to national agencies and organisations engaged
in internationalisation.

Representatives of the University of Silesia visited India

University of Silesia marked its presence in India during the educational mission, which took place from 2nd to 8th September 2018. The mission included educational fairs and meetings at universities and educational institutions in 4 major Indian cities: New Delhi (2.09), Chennai (4.09), Bangalore (6.09) and Mumbai (8.09).
