| Monument to students |
On the initiative of the authorities of the City of Katowice and the University of Silesia, a monument to students was erected on the central university campus in Katowice on June 24, 2008. The monument was designed by Prof. Jerzy Fober and Prof. Andrzej Szarek, Chair of Sculpture, Institute of Art, of the University of Silesia, in the motif of a smiling youth - an ancient Greek (kuros), in a symbolic way to refer to the classic sources of European Culture and the Plato Academy - the cradle of contemporary science and a prototype of education at the university level.

| An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Silesia for Professor Jan Węglorz |
In accordance with the decision of the Senate of the University of Silesia, an honorary doctorate from the University was granted to Professor Jan Węglorz, the Director of the Institute of Computer Science at the Poznań University of Technology, a Full Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and an Honorary Doctor at several schools of higher education. Professor Jan Węglorz is a world-renowned computer scientist with considerable academic experience and an initiator as well as the creator of the computer science infrastructure for the scientific community in Poland.

A group of youths from Berlin taking part in the Polish-German exchange organized by the two partnership cities, Tychy and Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Germany, visited the University of Silesia, Faculty of Social Sciences on 10 Jun 2008. |

| Right to confer research titles |
The Central Commission for Research Degrees and Titles of Poland has granted the Faculty of Theology the right to confer the research title of PhD Habilitatus from May 26, 2008. This is 11th research unit of the University of Silesia boasting such a right. To date the degree of PhD Habilitatus can be obtained at 8 Faculties and 3 Institutes of the University. |

| Platinum Laurels for His Magnificence Professor Janusz Janeczek |
 The awarding ceremony of Laurels of Excellence and Competence will take place in the Upper Silesia Centre of Culture in Katowice on January 19th 2008. The Platinum Laurels in the category "Pro Publico Bono" will be given to His Magnificence Janusz Janeczek, Professor, the Rector of the University of Silesia.

| An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Silesia for His Excellency Archbishop Damian Zimoń, PhD |
 The ceremony was held at the Faculty of Theology on 27 November 2007. Archbishop Damian Zimoń is an outstanding author of literary works about subjects of theology and social phenomena, a brave advocate of the dignity of labourers, a supporter of liberal arts and literary education in Silesia, and a great friend of our University.

| Professor Jerzy Stuhr Awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Silesia |
 In accordance with the decision of the Senate of 9 November 2007, an honorary doctorate from the University of Silesia will be granted to Professor Jerzy Stuhr, His Magnificence of Ludwik Solski State Higher School of Theatre, an outstanding artist, theatre and film actor, director, member of the European Academy of Film-making, a well-known didactic and academic teacher, who has rendered great service to European Culture.

 Prof. dr hab. Jacek Jania, the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Polar Research Committee attached to the Polish Academy of Sciences.
