Ph.D. Interdisciplinary Polar Studies welcome young researchers!

New exciting full-time Interdisciplinary Polar Studies welcome young researchers!

The Centre for Polar Studies offers a high quality Ph.D. programme, which will be conducted primarily in English (and entirely in English for foreign students). The Centre for Polar Studies (CPS) provides high level research of polar areas such as the Arctic and Antarctic environment, lectures, joint seminars and participation in scientific projects. Starting in October 2014 the course of studies has a duration of 4 years (8 semesters).

These very attractive studies will prepare a new generation of internationally competitive young scientists in the field of Earth sciences with a focus on high latitude land, ice and marine geosystems, ecosystems and polar climate change.

The graduates will be ready for taking over leading positions in research and education. They will obtain the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences, disciplines: Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Oceanology.

Application deadline: 5th September 2014

Candidates have to register in the IRK – online application system.

Interviews will take place on 15th-19th September 2014 in the institute appropriate to the chosen discipline. In a case of candidates from abroad the interview might be performed in the form of video conferencing (after earlier arrangement).

Scholarship: EU citizens and owners of Card of the Pole can apply for scholarships funded by the KNOW (Leading National Research Centre) 2 000 – 4000 PLN/month

Tuition fees applicable:

  • EU citizens applying on a regular basis – no fees;
  • Non-EU citizens: 3 000 EUR per year.

Cieszyn welcomes foreign students again!

24th Summer School of Polish language, literature and culture provided by the University of Silesia has begun in University's Campus in Cieszyn.

Polish language becomes more and more popular around the world that is why Summer School in Cieszyn is so popular. This year 150 students from 37 countries came to Cieszyn. The students are attracted to Polish language because of many reasons. Sometimes it’s due to their origins or personal interests. Nevertheless, more and more participants start their adventure with Polish language to continue their education in Poland.

A little picturesque city Cieszyn is very well-known abroad thanks to a great number of foreigners who come there every year to learn Polish language and about Polish culture. Summer school in Cieszyn is not a typical school. It offers not only regular classes and lectures, but also various language games, excursions and attractions during which students can improve their language skills and know each other better. The school gives a unique opportunity to take part in an exciting intensive course where one can meet representatives of culture, philosophy, and science.

The Summer School in Cieszyn also attracted Silesian media. Students from Uzbekistan, Japan and even Brazil had a chance to say hello to the Polish viewers.

Contest for university calendar creation

The University of Silesia in Katowice opens a competition to create a promotional calendar for year 2015.Actual employees, students, PhD students and graduates (2012/2013 and 2013/2014) of the University of Silesia can take part in the competition.

The project should be connected with the following themes:

  • research or artistic projects,
  • artistic or sport achievements,
  • well-known people connected with the University of Silesia,
  • artistic visions associated with the university,
  • university in the context of the city, region, society,
  • history of the university,
  • archival topics, e.g. connected with University’s 50-anniversary,
  • university’s infrastructure.

The project of the calendar may be done in any technique and has to contain the University’s logotype and highlighted date 8 June (the University of Silesia in Katowice holiday). It should also contain names of months and days at least in Polish and English languages (obligatory); descriptions in German, French and Russian languages are welcome.

Project should be prepared in PDF or JPG file (no more than 2 MB) and should be sent to: kalendarz@us.edu.pl,paper version should be delivered to:

The main award of the competition is realization of the project of the promotional calendar and 10 copies.

The deadline for application is 31 August, 2014.

The official announcement of the verdict of the competition’s commission and the award ceremony will be in November 2014 during the ceremony of handing diplomas to the best graduates of the academic year 2013/2014.
