Research

The University conducts educational and research activity in its twelve faculties, as well as interfaculty and university-wide units.

Teams consisting of academics and Ph.D. students strive to find solutions to current research problems and follow global trends within particular disciplines and specialties. Preference is given to those studies and research which are related to priority fields of research defined by the State Programme for Scientific Research and Development Works and which reflect thematic priorities set forth in the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union defined by the National Programme for Research and Development. The majority is basic research, but there is also applied research and research on innovation.

Studies conducted by researchers from the University of Silesia are extremely versatile and the findings are applicable in many disciplines. They predominantly concern such disciplines as: health and medicine, food and agriculture, environment and climate change, biotechnology, information technologies, nanotechnologies, materials and new technologies, energy, as well as various law, culture and education-related issues. Research priorities of particular faculties within the University of Silesia also depend on the specificity of these faculties (theology, fine arts, cinematography, ethnology, philosophy) and the region (research on Silesia and Borderland).

Researchers from the University of Silesia actively raise funds for execution of their projects. They do so by participating in competitions organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and other institutions, or by obtaining financial support from the EU Structural Funds, Framework Programmes or other institutions from abroad.

The significance of the achievements of our scholars and researchers is confirmed by e.g. their excellent publications in reputable international journals, papers delivered at prestigious academic conferences, invitations to join domestic and international research teams, orders for various research services, or inventions.
