Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and the Natural Sciences

The Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and the Natural Sciences (MISMP) is an innovative undergraduate programme available free of charge, especially attractive for candidates who have broad interests in mathematics and the natural sciences and want to go beyond the traditional system which limits academic courses to merely one discipline. This programme offers more comprehensive knowledge and training, thus significantly increasing the graduates’ chances of finding employment in the ever changing job market. It takes 3 years during which students may choose 2 from among the following fields of study available at faculties which collaborate on this project:

  • Mathematics, Physics, Medical Physics, Econophysics, Biophysics, Chemistry, Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry;
  • Biology, Biotechnology at the Faculty of Biology and Environment Protection;
  • Geography, Geology at the Faculty of Earth Sciences.

During the course of study, each student is supervised by a full professor or a habilitated Ph.D. (in special cases by a doctor) with whom they arrange their individual curriculum for each semester. This is a programme for talented, active, passionate and self disciplined students. If students fail to meet the high requirements, upon successful completion of an academic year they can resign from MISMP and transfer to theprogramme in which they have achieved positive grades. Upon completion of MISMP students may pursue a Master’s degree in one or two fields of study available under theMISMP programme (except for Computer Science, which they may major in at the Faculty of Computer Science and Materials Science) and obtain one or two Master’s degrees respectively. By choosing Physics or Chemistry, students can focus on solid state physics, molecular physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics and cosmology, elementary particles, nanosystems and nanotechnology, organic and inorganic chemistry, chromatography, polymer chemistry, quantum chemistry, or applications of physics and chemistry in medicine.

By deciding on Biology or Biotechnology, students will be able to pursue a career in the field of environmental biotechnology, molecular biology and genetics of plants, ecotoxicology and physiology of plants and animals, or biocenology of human transformed areas. Focusing on Geography or Geology will allow students to acquire knowledge related to hydrometeorology, cartography, global environmental changes, tourism, mineralogy and petrography, identification and documentation of mineral deposits, composition of the Earth and extraterrestrial bodies, climate and climatic changes, and processes leading to formation of caves and glaciers. By choosing Mathematics or Computer Science, students will receive knowledge and training that will enable them to work in the fields of mathematical modeling, mathematics in finance and economics, and mathematical methods in computer science. Alternatively, they may work as teachers of mathematics or IT, or specialize in the theory of these sciences.

Career opportunities

Graduates of our Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and the Natural Sciences demonstrate the same knowledge and skills as graduates of these individual courses. However, those who have completed the MISMP programme are better prepared for work in that they receive broader education, supplemented with knowledge acquired while taking a second course.
