Introduction to the University of Silesia

Until now, many students knew very little about the region of Upper Silesia and did not consider it as a study destination. Yet, there are many reasons why students can choose to attend courses at the University of Silesia will not be disappointed. The most important factor is that our four-campus University offers wide range of courses and friendly living conditions. Living on one of our campuses, you will make you familiar with Polish language and culture. Such knowledge, at a time of globalisation, has become an important component of any successful international career.

Overview and history

The University has its origins in the Higher School of Education, founded in 1928, which at that time the only higher institution of education in the region. In 1963, the School became a branch of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, one of the oldest Universities in the world. The University of Silesia was established June 8th, 1968 in Katowice as the ninth university in Poland. With about 45000 students and some 1900 academic staff, the University of Silesia is one of the largest in Poland.

International programme

One of the top priorities of the University policy in recent years has been an internationalisation of its research, artistic and educational activities. The University has signed 106 agreements of scientific and educational co-operation with universities and other research institutions from 32 countries. Understandably, the University has particularly strong links with European partner colleges. This does not mean that collaboration with partners from other continents lags behind.

School of Polish Language and Culture

If you enjoy Poland and wish to learn the Polish language, if you are interested in combining your studies with fun – make your plans reality by joining one of the programs we offer at the School of Polish Language and Culture, which organises, year round, courses of Polish as a Foreign Language for learners at different levels, both groups and individuals. An essential part of each Polish language, culture and literature course is the celebration of the most important Polish holidays.

Besides education

Come and explore the complexities of Polish culture; meet interesting people, learn a second language, become familiar with local customs and traditions; taste Silesian cuisine; and at the same time earn your degree. The characteristic feature of the region is the liking for the musical traditions of Upper Silesia. Four philharmonic orchestras, four symphonic orchestras and many local music groups are located in Katowice and in satellite towns around the city. There is an opera, two operettas and 14 theatres.
