The University of Silesia, established in 1968, is the only universitiy in Upper Silesia and one of the biggest public universities in Poland. It educates nearly 40,000  students at the Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels.

The University of Silesia collaborates with over 300 universities from all over the world exchanging students and academic staff and conducting joint educational and research projects. It is a member of numerous international associations and actively participates in European Commission initiatives.
